Bonk Bars was created because Steve Schaming loves the word Bonk. He’s also passionate about good food with 15 years working in restaurants including, Italian, Fine Dining, Specialty Beer Bars, BBQ Joints, Hemmingways Local Pub and an Irish Diner.
BONK was designed to give you enough energy to recover from working out really hard. Steve was finding he was “bonking” while training for hiking the Middle Sister Mountain near Canmore Alberta. This mountain is 1.5km in elevation gain! He has yet to climb it but with continued training and bonk bars to keep him energized Steve hopes to climb this mountain by the end of August this year.
Steve also is passionate about always doing better and that even simple food should taste good and be affordable to everyone. BONK bars also are aiming to be inclusive. We currently don’t accommodate nut allergies but bonk bars are completely GLUTEN FREE and VEGETARIAN with many of our recipes being VEGAN. Steve also is working towards making all BONK bars sulphite free within the next few months.
Oats (Sprouted, Organic, Gluten Free, Whole-Grain )
Our Oats come from a supplier that is Canada Organic, Celiac Canada Gluten Free, Non-GMO Verified, Non-Glyphosate Certified & MADE IN CANADA. Using only plant-based cultivation methods BONK oats are sprouted and enhanced with vitamins and minerals for easy digestion. If you are tasting popcorn that is from our toasting process. NOM NOM NOM.
Fun Fact: Most Oats you can buy are Whole-Grain so that’s not really special!

Brown Rice Cereal (Gluten Free, Organic, Whole Grain, Vegan)
Our rice cereal comes from a supplier that is certified Gluten Free, Verified Non-GMO, Canada Organic. Member of ECO-PAC (using less packaging). It is indeed VEGAN, some rice cereals are fortified with vitamins from animals but our rice cereal is not, hooray!

Cocoa (Organic, Fair-Trade, Gluten Free)
Well we just use Camino! Camino products are Fair-Trade so they do not use exploitative child-labour that is common in the cocoa industry. BONK wants the best future for everyone so we support ethically sourced ingredients. If your curiosity is peaked you can learn more about it here.

Maple Syrup (Grade A, Non-GMO Verified, 100% Canadian)
What’s a snack without some delicious maple syrup? Not much to say here but this a great substitute we have found to make a variation from the honey in our OG recipe to make VEGAN options.

This is not my Dad. But he is doing something with maple syrup. Maybe reducing the sap to syrup?
Coconut Oil (Canada Organic, Non-GMO Verified, GF)
Our South East Asian coconut oil we use in every bar to grease trays and keep things sticking together is steam refined to avoid using harsh chemicals. Another fun fact refined coconut oil does not have a coconut flavour. We are open to using coconut flavours in the future though if it makes sense.

This is the coconut tree we hope to relax under once enough customers have bought our BONK bars.
Natural Peanut Butter (Kraft)
We are currently using Kraft Natural Peanut Butter in our BONK bars, we think it tastes good but we are open to alternative sourcing. Not saving the planet here but maybe there’s room for improvement? I just like how Kraft PB tastes.

Matcha Hagoromo
We are using Japanese Matcha Hagoromo. An exceptional premium grade matcha from Japan rich in umami, vivid in color, and supremely smooth on the palate. We are also looking into adding another type of Green Tea in addition to our Matcha to make our Matcha La Vista bar taste even better… more coming soon!
